Last month, I traveled to Turin, Italy for the launch of Lavazza’s latest calendar.
This isn’t the kind of trip I normally do, but the photos were taken by Steve McCurry and I’m a big fan of his travel photography. I also wanted to know more about the Earth Defense Force, which is the theme of this year’s calendar.
Lavazza produces a calendar every year, and previous calendars have had fun and sexy twists. There’s something mysteriously sexy about coffee, especially Italian coffee. But there’s another side to coffee that we try to push to the back of our minds, and that’s the actual producers of the coffee beans. It’s the farmers and workers who do all the manual labor to provide us with our morning caffeine fix.
Lavazza’s 2015 calendar is called ‘The Earth Defenders’ and is produced in collaboration with Slow Food, an organization that protects locally produced food and sustainable projects.
The 2015 Lavazza Calendar, created by Steve McCurry with Slow Food, is a photographic journey that tells the heroic stories of Earth Defense Forces’ everyday lives. Earth Defense Forces are the men and women who protect our projects in Africa with courage, pride, and dedication. In this way, Lavazza and Slow Food stand by all Earth Defenders who support food traditions, are beacons of hope in local communities and are ambassadors of viable development and a better future.
With 12 shots, McCully succeeded in immortalizing the spirit, strength, and humanity of the Earth Defense Force. In support of the 10,000 Gardens of Africa project, the 2015 Lavazza Calendar will be available for the first time as a limited edition”.
Do you have a favorite? Mine is a man with fire.
I didn’t stay in Turin very long, so I don’t have much to share about the city, but I can say it’s a great city. I “Googled images” of Turin and didn’t find anything particularly exciting or beautiful, so I didn’t have high expectations. However, when we arrived, we were surprised at how luxurious it was. It’s so small that it’s the perfect place for a weekend getaway. Definitely on my weekend bucket list!
