One of my favorite rooms to decorate in the entire house is George’s room. I was living with his parents while renovating my own house, so I felt strangely sad that I couldn’t decorate the nursery while I was pregnant with him. I think the nesting instinct kicked in, but I didn’t have a place to channel that nesting instinct.
Now that it’s over, I’m really glad I waited. If it were me, I would have chosen a cute, neutral, childish decor, but George seems too old for that already. He’s almost 10 months old, but he’s starting to feel more like a little boy than a baby.
Before we begin, let’s take a moment to remember what George’s room looked like this time last year!
The window on the left is George’s room, and the window on the right is the bathroom
George was 6 months old when we moved into our new home, so we immediately headed for a travel-themed bedroom for our little boy.
The star of the show is obviously this wallpaper from Mural Wallpaper. Isn’t it amazing! This is a world map mural for Explorer Kids, and I’m not sure who likes it more, me or George.
the furniture is all Mum and Dad, but I found this set second hand on eBay.
This part of the room is a bit random in shape, as there was originally a cupboard here. My dad stole a little space off the stairs and created this space, the perfect size for a child’s bed. He says one of the perks of tearing down all the walls before moving. Once George is old enough for a “big boy bed,” Father plans to build him a bed with drawers underneath to fit in the space. Very clever!
The photo was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in London on Father’s Day. It was a great project by Photobox and Sam that I was very proud to be a part of. This photo now hangs proudly in George’s room.
We’ve had this gorgeous sheepskin rug since George was born and it’s so soft and fluffy. I think every baby’s bedroom needs this. It’s so nice to see them rolling around and learning to crawl, and it’s also a great background for photos. SnugRugs baby sheepskin.
My mom made this blind using materials she found at Abakahn.
Ideas for a travel themed kid’s bedroom
My next plan is to create a mini gallery on the wall above George’s cot. I found these 30 free printables of him at Little Gold Pixels, so all you need to do is get a cheap frame from IKEA, the supermarket, etc. Etsy also has a lot of inexpensive prints like this one.
