You probably already know that I’m an ambassador for Lumix and their range of 4K cameras. In the announcement article he gave a brief introduction to 4K photography, but today I’d like to explain a little more about it and explain why this is such a great inversion.
The main advantage of 4K cameras is their ability to capture movement.
Most people take photos of stationary objects and natural scenes. When we take pictures of people, we ask them to stop what they are doing and stand still. I do this because when I try to take pictures of movement, they don’t come out very well and look messy. So for many years, we have been programmed to take still photos where no one moves and everything is still. This creates a static moment that often looks unnatural and prevents you from capturing the moment.
But this is not what life is all about. Life is busy, chaotic, and full of movement and fun. When I take photos, what I really want to take are photos with movement. A photo with something funny happening in the background, a dog jumping, a baby laughing, or a bubble bursting. These are the photos I want to take.
And this is where 4K cameras come in.
When shooting with a 4K camera, you have the option to switch to video mode. Video is captured at 30 frames/second. Just in case you’re new to this (like me!), there are a lot of frames in this one. Because there are so many frames, the video can be analyzed to pull out individual still images.
you may have already tried this with a video in post-production. I tried to do it by pausing the video in iMovie and taking a screenshot of the moment in the video. Although this kind of feature is present, the images are never sharp and clear.
But the images you get from the Lumix 4k camera are very clear. To make it even easier, you can use the camera’s features to capture images, so you don’t have to upload them to your computer first.
This means you can capture the action and wait for the phantom ‘perfect moment’.
Perfect for action shots and sports. Think of the moment someone slam dunks a basketball or kicks a soccer ball into the net. But it’s also great for everyday moments that are hard to miss. Maybe your dog is running in the park or taking pictures of kids and babies. Perhaps it’s an artistic shot of coffee dripping into a cup or leaves blowing in the wind. It’s also great for selfies because you can extract the perfect pose from a 3-second video instead of taking millions of photos of yourself. (Trust me, it’s there, and it’s usually not the moment you’re fully smiling at the camera)
So I think it’s time to stop taking pictures of the moment it stops. Don’t wait for the perfect shot or tell everyone to stand perfectly still. It’s time to capture every smile, every wagging tail, and every perfect moment.
