Here’s the easiest way to back up your iPhone and transfer photos and videos to an external storage device.

Backup your iPhone without online storage
First things first, you need to get your hands on one of these clever little gadgets.
this is a 4-in-1 reader that allows you to move photos and videos from your phone (iPhone or Android) to an external memory card (regular memory card or micro SD card). You can easily move it from your SD card to your computer or through your computer to an external hard drive.
Here’s what you need:

I’m using a Seagate 1TB hard drive. I buy a new one every 1-2 years (I take lots of photos) and keep all my photos, videos, and work documents on my hard drive for a year. If you keep things organized and remember what year it happened, it’s easy to find the files you’re looking for!
How to backup the photos and videos on your iPhone
First, select the photos and videos you want to backup from your phone and go to ‘Files’.

3. Create a new folder in “Files” and name it appropriately
I recommend moving them in batches of about 200-300 and saving each batch in a separate folder.
These photos moved over 400 photos and videos (some of them long), which is not recommended. It took quite a while, but it’s actually much faster to split it into smaller folders.
Create a month’s worth of folders for events, special occasions, holidays, and more. If nothing special happens, I’ll save a season’s worth of photos all at once.
My folders are named like this:
- January 2023
- Mallorca public holidays in 2022
- Christmas 2022
- George’s 7th Birthday 2022
- Spring 2022
Once you’ve sorted your folders under Files, insert your memory card into your storage device, and then insert the device into your phone.
4. Place the device into your phone with a blank memory card
5. Go to file
6. Select file
7. Click the folder button at the bottom center of the page. This will allow you to move the folder to another location.
8. Click Browse to return to your storage device. Then click on your device and the folder will be transferred automatically. It may take a while

It will take a few minutes for it to be transferred to your device. To know when it’s done, keep an eye on the loading circle at the top of the screen.
Once that’s done, you can remove the device, put it on your computer, and move each folder to your hard drive.
Is this better than using online storage like iCloud or Google?
if you already own a computer and hard drive, this is the cheapest, quickest, and easiest way to back up your iPhone and transfer all your photos and videos from your phone to your laptop or external hard drive.
You can use online storage options, but they’re more expensive and you’ll only be able to access your files if you have good Wi-Fi. This isn’t a problem in most cases, but I travel a lot and want to be able to access my files when I’m working from a plane or camping in the Sahara desert!
iCloud storage costs £2.99/month for 200GB or £6.99/month for 2TB. Personally he needs 2TB, which costs £83.88 per year. Buying a £20 gadget to quickly transfer files from your phone to your hard drive is a much easier option.
Another option is to use Airdrop to send the file to your laptop.
