Llanbedrog Beach – Everything you need to know when visiting my favorite beach on the Llin Peninsula!
Llanbedrog Beach has quickly become one of my favorite beaches on the Llyn Peninsula. This mile-long stretch of gorgeous golden sand is spectacular and will make you feel like you’re on a tropical island rather than Wales every time you visit!
Upon arrival, there is a short path leading down to the beach and you are immediately greeted by a lush, tropical atmosphere. A stream runs to your right, rushing to the surface and the lush canopy above creates dappled light, and you’re instantly transported to somewhere exotic!
And you can see the beach. You won’t be disappointed with this large and inviting bay.
Because Long Beach is protected, it is much warmer and the water is calmer than other beaches on the Llyn Peninsula. The beach overlooks Cardigan Bay, so the views are amazing and the water is crystal clear!
Let’s start with the basics…how do you pronounce Llanbedrog Beach?
If you’re an English speaker and haven’t heard much Welsh, this may seem like a very unusual word, but let me assure you that it’s actually quite easy to say!
Let’s start with the double “L” at the beginning of Llanbedrog.
The Welsh double L is pronounced by placing the tip of the tongue just behind the top teeth of the mouth and exhaling so that the sound comes out the side of the mouth.
try saying a sound similar to “cl” without moving your tongue.
welsh speakers don’t like me to say this, but when you say ‘cl’ very quickly it sounds similar to ‘ll.
So Ll-an-bed-rog.
Llanbedrog Beach Huts
You may have already seen photos of these gorgeous and vibrant cabins. Llanbedrog Beach Hut is an iconic part of the beach and gives it such a fun atmosphere.
The beach huts at Llanbedlog are owned by the National Trust and available to hire for the season for £450. It is intended to be rented by locals and regular visitors as it cannot be rented for just a day or a week.
You must apply to rent a Llanbedrog Beach Hut.
Llanbedrog beach bar
As you walk down to Llanbedrog Beach, you will see Llanbedrog Beach Bar on your right. This bar is called Aqua Beach Bar and it truly is the most amazing spot for a beach cafe!
Aqua serves food, alcohol, and ice cream.
It’s open from 9 a.m and breakfast is served until 11 a.m.
We offer a beach bar menu from 12pm to 6pm.
Aqua is currently operating under a new management structure (as of spring 2022). This bar previously had very mixed reviews, but from what I’ve seen the new management is doing a much better job, so best to ignore it!
It is not possible to reserve a table at Llanbedrog Beach Bar. It’s also crowded during peak hours, so there’s usually a line for a table. I recommend arriving a little earlier than the time you want to eat, just in case it takes longer.
Parking at Llanbedrog Beach
Parking is very easy at Llanbedrog Beach as there is a large National Trust car park.
Parking is free if you’re a National Trust member. Simply scan your card at the machine and a ticket will be issued.
If you are not a member you will need to pay a £5 daily parking fee.
The £5 parking fee at Llanbedrog Beach is paid with five £1 coins or using the online parking app PayByPhone.
Phone reception is pretty good at Llanbedrog Beach, but we recommend downloading the app before you arrive for your convenience.
It’s a short walk from the parking lot to the beach. There are stairs from the parking lot to the beach, but they are not steep and are easy to walk.
If you prefer step-free access to the beach, there is a short path leading to the beach at the entrance to the parking lot, so you can walk around. This road has a gentle slope.
National Trust Adventure Packs
A small National Trust hut can be seen at the entrance to Llanbedrog Beach car park. You can often see “adventure packs” hanging on hooks outside the hut. These green backpacks are filled with goodies for exploring the beach as a family.
Packs are free but must be returned by 3pm.
Inside you’ll find worksheets and activities to help you learn more about the beach and enjoy your trip to Llanbedrog even more.
If you’re a National Trust member, be sure to read my post about the best National Trust sites in Wales.
10 must-see National Trust attractions in North Wales
Are there toilets on Llanbedrog Beach?
Yes, we have a nice toilet block with men’s and women’s toilets.
I wouldn’t say that the toilets at Llanbedrog Beach are luxurious, but by British beach toilet standards they are really good.
Every time I went, the restrooms were clean and toilet paper was provided.
There are no disabled toilets or diaper changing tables.
If you’re traveling with a baby or toddler, it’s a good idea to install a small changing table in the trunk of your car.
Is Llanbedrog Beach dog friendly?
Yes, well-behaved dogs are admitted to Llanbedrog Beach.
Is Llanbedrog Beach sandy?
Yes, Llanbedrog Beach has beautiful golden sand. In fact, it’s one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the area, always clean and gorgeous.
When the tide goes out, some areas of the shore turn to pebbles, but you can always hop around and pick a sandy area.
Can you sleep in the Llanbedrog beach huts?
No, you can’t sleep there. It may be too small to actually sleep on, but you definitely can’t sleep there.
Walking to the Tin Man from Llanbedrog Beach
This is a very popular walk from Llanbedrog Beach to the Tin Woodman.
The famous tin figure sculpture stands on the headland and overlooks the bay.
There are two routes you can take to get to the Tin Woodman.
The first staircase starts from the beach and climbs steep, rocky steps to the top. When you arrive at Llanbedrog Beach, walk to the right and you will come across this path. If you decide to go this route, you will need to wait until the tide has receded a bit. The road is short and tough, but my kids can get through it. My sons (age 5 and girlfriend 7) are doing just fine, but my daughter (age 2) needs a little help. My mom is afraid of heights, so she finds this path a little scary!
The second route starts from Oriel Plas Y Weddw. As you walk past the hall, the path begins on the right side of the parking lot. This trail is much gentler and my 2 year old manages to do most of the way up to the Tin Woodman.
Neither path is suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.
Circular Walking Route from Llanbedrog Beach
If you want to walk a little further, you can continue past the Tin Woodman and follow the approximately 3-mile circular walking route. This is just amazing.
Click here for details on the walking route.
It’s a really nice walk and I highly recommend it!
Glyn-y-Weddw pub near Llanbedrog Beach
If you need a snack after spending some time at the beach or following the circular walking route, the Glyn-y-Weddw pub is the place to go. This cozy pub serves standard pub fare and is famous for its Sunday carvery.
There is a large outdoor seating area and a nice play area for the children.
The Spar and pharmacy
There is also a small but well stocked Spar next to the pub. This store sells all ice creams, cold drinks, and basic ready-to-eat foods. Although the restaurant looks a bit rustic, it’s actually quite tasty and the staff are lovely.
There is also a pharmacy on the other side of the parking lot, which is convenient if you need medication or sunscreen.
Llanbedrog Beach Shop
There is also a small shop near the entrance to Llanbedrog Beach. Honestly, this store has to be one of the most beautiful, yet most disappointing stores I’ve ever been to!
We sell ice cream and some expensive beach toys, but we don’t have much else in stock.
Oriel Plas Y Weddw
Near the entrance to the beach car park you will also find the stunning entrance to Oriel Plas Y Weddw.
Oriel Plas Y Weddw is a beautiful arts center with a cafe, gallery, forest, garden and outdoor theater. This is one of the oldest arts centers in Wales and you can’t stop looking around when you visit Llanbedrog Beach!
Paddleboarding at Llanbedrog Beach
Llanbedrog Beach is my favorite place to paddleboard on the Llyn Peninsula. I love it here because the sea is so calm and the mile long beach means there’s always plenty of room to get in the water.
I also love that the parking lot is so close to the beach that I don’t have to walk far to grab my board!
