The best places for afternoon tea in Chester - Travel Hacks

Chester is a beautiful city and afternoon tea in Chester is a real treat. Here are some of my favourite places in Chester for afternoon tea!

After restrictions and government guidelines during the Covid-19 pandemic, finding great afternoon tea in Chester has become a bit difficult. Some of our favorite places are unfortunately closed, and some have limited menus that don’t include the traditional afternoon tea.

But don’t worry. There are still some great places to enjoy afternoon tea in Chester. We will update this list as locations reopen or new businesses are welcomed to the city.

The Chester Grosvenor

Best for: Celebrating a special occasion

The Chester Grosvenor is probably Chester’s most famous luxury afternoon tea venue. This luxurious 5-star hotel stands proudly in the heart of the city, overlooking the famous Eastgate Clock Tower.

Afternoon tea has been served in this stunning gallery and drawing room since 1882, so it took several years to perfect. Choose from Traditional Afternoon Tea, Luxurious Afternoon Tea or ‘Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea’. Don’t worry, Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea is open to everyone. Delicate sandwiches will be replaced by heartier dishes like crispy haddock, coronation chicken and Applebee’s Cheshire cheese on a toasted bloomer.

Chester Zoo

Best for: Animal lovers or afternoon tea in Chester with kids

If you’re looking for a special afternoon tea in Chester, why not check out the zoo? Spend the morning strolling through the zoo, spotting animals, and admiring the stunning gardens. When you need a break, head to Oakfield, a modern British pub in the heart of the zoo.

You have to buy a ticket to enter the zoo, but it’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle while you’re at the zoo. Traditional afternoon tea is served, but the real draw is the beautiful setting. The Oakfield is a stunning Grade II listed building that has been beautifully restored. It has a luxurious yet cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for families, couples and friends.

Oddfellows

Best for: A unique afternoon tea

Oddfellows is a charming boutique hotel in Chester city centre. The decor is quirky, playful and bright, making it the perfect place for afternoon tea in Chester. We offer a variety of afternoon teas, from traditional to savory, cream tea, prestige, just finger sandwiches and afternoon tea for children.

If possible, we highly recommend requesting afternoon tea in the secret walled garden. There, you’ll be joined by cheeky gnomes, gorgeous flowers, and (hopefully!) sunshine.

The Grosvenor Pulford, Palm Court

Best for: Combining afternoon tea in Chester with a spa day

Not to be confused with this, as it is another ‘Grosvenor’. The Grosvenor Pulford Hotel and Spa is a few miles from Chester, but it’s worth stopping for afternoon tea at Palm Court. This stunning hotel is located on the borders of North Wales and has beautiful gardens and a luxurious yet homely atmosphere.

The main restaurant, Palm Court, is a bright and airy garden room filled with plants and magical twinkling lights. Afternoon tea is a delightful experience with a wide range of drinks to choose from including loose leaf his tea, prosecco, champagne, G&Ts and cocktails.

The Grosvenor Pulford’s spa is also amazing, so if you’re looking for a full day of fun, we recommend combining a spa day with afternoon tea for a pampering experience!

If you love all things pink and girly, you’ll love Palm Chester. A cocktail bar and eatery on Watergate Street, it’s a glittery addition to a pink Prosecco paradise.

Afternoon Tea at Palm Chester offers a modern twist with pan-fried chicken sliders and New York salmon bagels. After researching this article and only reading about the Coronation Chicken Finger Sandwich, this is a welcome change. You can also upgrade to prosecco or cocktails. We also have a lovely children’s afternoon tea menu that every little princess will love!

Zuger’s of Chester

Best for: A casual afternoon tea

Chester’s Zuger’s on St John Street is a friendly and inviting tearoom with a traditional afternoon tea menu that keeps locals coming back again and again. This is the place to enjoy good old-fashioned afternoon tea, friendly service and good company with friends.
